Coming off of resoundingly positive praise for his eulogy at the Whitney Houston funeral, Kevin Costner is turning to his music to sooth his soul. The Academy Award-winning director, producer and star of such hit films as Dances With Wolves, JFK, Mr. Brooks and The Bodyguard is currently out on the road headlining shows with his band Modern West.
The rock/country band consists of Costner (vocals, guitar), John Coinman (guitar, vocal harmonies), Blair Forward (bass), Larry Cobb (drums), Park Chisolm (vocals, guitar), Teddy Morgan (lead guitar) with rotating fiddle performances from Bobby Yang, Roddy Chong and Luke Bulla. The band have played to ecstatic audiences in Europe, Asia, Canada, South America and the U.S.
Costner, Coinman and Forward used to play together in the band Roving Boy in the 80s before his acting career took off. The road back to music is a personal one for Costner. “I always thought that music could build a stronger, more personal moment with people. It could create an opportunity for genuine exchange much greater than a movie, TV interview or magazine. It would be real, full of mistakes and without apology. But most of all, there would be a chance to have some fun.”
The band’s third album, From Where I Stand, released in 2011 is available for purchase through Edel Records. They have performed at various benefit events and USO concerts for military troops serving abroad.
Costner will next appear as “Devil” Anse Hatfield in the History Channel mini-series Hatfields & McCoys Memorial Day weekend along with Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Tom Berenger and Mare Winningham. He’ll also be seen in Zack Snyder‘s 2013 Superman movie Man Of Steel as Jonathan Kent.
