The upcoming 20th Century Fox film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Rupert Wyatt, is a bit of a wild card to me. Yes, I love the series (save for Tim Burton‘s absolutely dreadful version starring Mark Wahlberg) and yes the apes (or primates) in this new version do look absolutely spectacular, but I haven’t seen Wyatt’s other films (The Escapist, Subterrain) and the photography is a little too “bright” for my liking from the preview.
However, those apes do look fantastic and Andy Serkis‘ performance as Caesar (using motion capture technology), the central figure in this film, “Patient Zero”, if you will, seems incredibly nuanced and touching. You can see the full range of Serkis’ work in the below extended clip, which Serkis himself sets up. Take note of what Caesar is playing with in the scene before he’s distracted by the ruckus outside of his home. Please to enjoy.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, August 05th and stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox and Tom Felton.

An exceptional movie that entertains all through and maintains a decent respect for the audience’s mental capabilities. Particularly impressive is the character development for the ape characters given their lack of spoken dialogue. Nicely worth the watch!
