Captain America fights with the Red Skull (or, not so Red Skull thanks to plastic surgery) in Albert Pyun's 1990 version of Captain America

21 years before Joe Johnston‘s Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans as America’s super soldier and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, cinematic hack Albert Pyun made his low-rent version of the American hero in, of all places, Yugoslavia.  Starring non-screen legend Matt Salinger as the Captain and Scott Paulin as his arch-enemy, the 1990 film never found release in America, instead becoming a widely bootlegged laugh fest (like its 1994 counterpart The Fantastic Four).

But on July 19th, three days before Johnston’s big-budget version sees definite release in theaters everywhere, Pyun’s shelved camp fest will finally get a proper release from MGM video.  So if you’re looking for a great bad movie to make fun of ala Mystery Science Theater 3000, then I suggest you pick up Pyun’s version of Captain America.  But if you want to see the Marvel comic book character treated properly, wait and see Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22nd.

I look cool, right? No? Damn...
