mp3: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Even Heroes Have To Die

by Leah Tevis

The Brutalist Bricks is the first release from Ted Leo and company on Matador, but the sixth overall.  The album features the regular buoyant melodies and pop riffs the band is known for and they break the ice with “Mighty Sparrow”, a charged track that lays the bouncy path for the rest of the album.   A slight break occurs with “The Stick”, a heavier, faster, grinding song; and the slower somber tune “One Polaroid A Day”.  This indie/folk/pop band has not evolved a whole lot over the years, with the songs on The Brutalist Bricks barring easy familiarity with their older songs.  For anyone who never was a TL/Rx fan nothing much has changed, so stay away.  Long time fans will unquestionably be happy; the band has stuck to their fool proof formula.
